Abdullah sworn in as PM

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was sworn in as Prime Minister before the King this morning, following Barisan's victory in Saturday's general election.

Even after Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has sworn in, there are still rumours saying otherwise. The stock market was very sensitive and fell to 130 points to hit the circuit breaker where the market came to a halt for an hour.

Reading The Star online report below, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi looks still getting strong support from BN and UMNO.

"Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi chaired the Barisan Nasional supreme council meeting here to discuss various issues involving the performance of its component parties in the just-concluded 12th General Election.

The meeting was held after the prime minister, who is Umno president, chaired the party's supreme council meeting.

Abdullah received a standing ovation as he walked in at 1.15pm for the Umno supreme council meeting, which went on for three hours.

The supreme council gave him full backing for all reforms necessary for the party to recover from its poor showing in the election, where it failed to retain a two-thirds majority in Parliament and saw five states and the Federal Territory slip to opposition control.

Almost all of the Barisan component party leaders attended the meeting, including MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, PPP president Datuk M. Kayveas and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Yong Teck Lee."

There is no question of Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi resigning because BN is still in power obtaining 140 parliamentary seats out of 222 .

He has won in his Kepala Batas seat and secured a majority of 11,246. If he were to lose in Kepala Batas, then it is a different story.

Now that he has sworn in as the Prime Minister, he should look forward and study the factors leading to this set-back.

Tun Mahathir said that the agreement is for Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to stay one-term and step down, even if he were to do that it cannot ensure that BN would not face this political tsunami because many of the issues might have been inherited from Mahathir’s era.

I think Tun Mahathir had said in his interview with Bloomberg that BN should stay together and face the problem together. This statement is more appropriate. In fact, Tun Mahathir had contradicted himself when he asked Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi to step down.
