BN will form new Government but opposition took 5 states

PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawai will seek an audience with the King at 6pm to inform him that Barisan Nasional has won the general election.

Senior UMNO leaders have gathered at PM's house in Putrajaya to pledge their support for him; PM is not resignin, said an aide.

Kedah PAS commissioner and Sg Limau assemblyman Azizan Abdul Razak was sworn in as the new Kedah Mentri Besar at 3.30pm today.


The Barisan Nasional will form the next Government as it has won more than half the parliamentary seats.

However, the coalition suffered some of the greatest defeats in its history. Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, in accepting the results, said this was clear proof of democracy at work in the country.


Acting Gerakan president Dr Koh Tsu Koon has taken full responsibility for the party's poor showing in the eleciton and offered to step down.


EC: Barisan gets simple majority in Johor, Terengganu, Pahang and Perlis;two-thirds majority in Malacca, more results to follow.

Among the results yesterday were:


The Barisan lost Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor,
PAS strengthened grip on Kelantan,

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting won in their seats,

Among ministers who lost their seats were Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin,

Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon lost to Dr P. Ramasamy in the Batu Kawan parliamentary seat.

Meanwhile, party leaders urged for calm and police have banned all victory celebrations


PKR's Abdul Khalid Ibrahim will be sworn in as the Mentri Besar of Selangor when the new state government is formed, said PKR and DAP leaders.
