Najib: democracy alive and well in Malaysia

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's victory in the Permatang Pauh by-election shows that democracy is very much alive in the country, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Congratulating Anwar on his win, Najib said it also proved that there was no manipulation of democracy as alleged by the PKR adviser.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim won the Permatang Pauh seat with a thumping majority of 15,671.

With the victory, Anwar will take over as the parlimentary Opposition Leader.
Anwar polled 31,195 votes while his Barisan Nasional opponent, Datuk Arif Shah Omar got 15,524. Hanafi Hamat of Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia(Akim), who contested as an independent, lost his deposit.

The PKR de facto leader last won the Permatang Pauh seat in 1995 with a majority 22,515 votes.

Anwar could not contest the March 8 general election because he was barred from contesting for five years after he failed to overturn a corruption verdict against him.

ANWAR IBRAHIM won the Permatang Pauh by-election

PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PERMATANG PAUH, MALAYSIA, 26 AUGUST 2008

We won! And our victory is decisive and overwhelming.

I share in the joy felt by all Malaysians on this historic day. This is a victory for the people. And it’s great to be back!

On March 8th Malaysians voted for a New Dawn. Today, on the eve of our independence day, we have reasserted that call. We celebrate our nation’s independence in the spirit that our founding fathers intended - a nation of one and a people united.

In the face of the greatest adversity, our campaign focused on the issues that matter to Malaysians. Our calls for national unity, good governance and a vibrant democracy have silenced the voices of racist chanting, those who profit from the abuse of power and exploit the politics of fear and deceit.

We have promised a New Dawn for Malaysia and we will deliver on our promise. We will forge ahead on our Malaysian Economic Agenda to revive the economy, and to uplift the poor and the marginalized of all races. We will restore the integrity of the judiciary, fight corruption and build a truly unified nation.

We will be a government that is totally committed to realizing the people’s aspirations.

With the success of the eight of March and tonight’s resounding victory, I daresay we are indeed ready to face the challenges of the future, together.

We could not have won without the firm, unwavering support of our friends in the Pakatan Rakyat and the tens of thousands of Malaysians – Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Kadhazans - who have come to Permatang Pauh to work hard for this victory. I truly appreciate your courage, conviction and valour; and congratulate your commitment to our shared principles of freedom, justice and democracy.

This may be one small step for Permatang Pauh but one giant leap for the people of Malaysia.

ANWAR IBRAHIM

MSLS Forum with Tony Pua and Khairy

MSLS Forum with Tony Pua and Khairy
04 Aug 2008 | Current Affairs, Personal | by admin | 2 Komen

Yesterday afternoon I joined YB Tony Pua and YB Khairy Jamaluddin in a forum that is part of the Malaysian Student Leaders Summit at Nikko Hotel. The forum was called: Subsidies - Necessities or Tongkat Mentality.

As the United Kingdom and Eire Executive Council for Malaysian Students (UKEC) was the organiser of the program, I felt the extra need to fulfill the invitation as I was in the committee back in my second year at university. UKEC’s founding chairman, Allahyarham Adlan Benan Omar and another chairman, Rafizi Ramli played a big role in getting me involved in politics in the first place.

Anyway, back to the forum, my contention is that the drastic oil price hike hurt many ordinary Malaysians. I accept that in the long run, our policies need to be reformed to adjust to the higher price of oil, but we need a long-term, comprehensive policy - not short-term policies like we have right now.

I also defended Datuk Seri Anwar’s promise that the next day after forming government, he will lower the price of oil - repeating Anwar’s explanation in the TV debate against Shabery Cheek a few weeks back.

Tony pointed out how our budget has ballooned in recent years, not so much in development costs, but operating costs. This means that a lot is lost in bureaucracy. Khairy admitted the problem of leakages, but contends that much of the operating costs is needed to run things. I chided Khairy by saying what he calls leakages, I call corruption. I cited Morgan Stanley’s research that we have lost an estimated RM330 billion from corruption over the past two decades. Pemudah itself, a government-linked body, estimates that we will lose RM10 billion from of domestic growth this year.

All in all, it was a good event, and I enjoyed being there. Congratulations to the organisers and students for a well-executed program.

BLAIR AND THE CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE---By Dr Mahathir Mohamad

BLAIR AND THE CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE

Malaysia-politics-Tun-Dr-Mahathir-Perdana-Global-Peace.jpg
I feel sad that after a very well attended Press Conference (see picture) chaired by me as Chairman of the Kuala Lumpur Perdana Global Peace Organisation to condemn the visit of the war criminal Tony Blair, almost nothing has appeared in the print and electronic media in this country.

It looks as if Malaysia supports the criminal action of this former British Prime Minister who lied to his Parliament, to the British people and the world that Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) which could hit Britain in a matter of minutes.

On the basis of this lie he joined George Bush of the United States to launch a massive war against Iraq, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis and destroying their cities, the electricity and water supply.

When no WMDs were found in Iraq, this war criminal claimed that he and Bush unleashed their killers against Iraq to rid it of (President) Saddam Hussein and to make Iraq and all the countries in West Asia democratic.

Saddam has been caught together with his Cabinet members and hanged after trial by a kangaroo court.

But the killings in Iraq has not stopped. It is five years plus and the Iraqi people, from babies to old people, the healthy and the sick, are being killed or savagely wounded every day.

Whatever Saddam may have done, nothing that he did can compare with the death and destruction caused by Blair and Bush.

If Saddam is regarded as a criminal for the harsh way he built up his country, if Radovan Karadzic is a criminal because of the thousands of Bosniaks he massacred, then Blair together with Bush must be condemned as worse criminals, for the senseless and pointless war of aggression they launched i.e. for mass killings of innocent people that they ordered to be carried out without an ounce of mercy, with no compassion for the Iraqi people.

Blair is truly a criminal who was rejected even by the British people.

It is disgusting to see this criminal of the highest order being welcomed in Malaysia and worse still to talk on the rule of law when he broke all international laws and the laws of his own country by deliberately lying and sending young British soldiers to die in a war of aggression.

The conspiracy of silence by Malaysia's media is to be condemned for you are lending support to a War Criminal whose criminal acts must not go unpunished.

Yet you have seen how readily the United States and its cohorts condemn the President of Sudan, Omar Bashir, for alleged war crimes in Darfur when there is no evidence that he deliberately issued orders to war against anyone.
