Teoh inquiry:MACC officer stuns all by bursting into tears

Teoh inquiry: MACC officer stuns all by bursting into tears
By WANI MUTHIAH

KUALA LUMPUR: The Commission of Inquiry into the death of Teoh Beng Hock was momentarily stunned when a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigating officer burst into tears while testifying.

Mohd Anuar Ismail, who headed the investigations revolving around the alleged fraudulent disbursement of state funds by Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah and Kg Tunku assemblyman Ng Weng San, was narrating the emotional trauma and fear he experienced on hearing about the political aide’s death.

“I was very shocked. He was our witness and was with me the previous night.

“He was fine and healthy but now this had happened,” said Mohd Anwar.

Teoh, 30, who was Ean Yong political secretary, was taken to the Selangor MACC office on the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam on July 15, 2009 by Anuar and his team.

He was found dead on the buildings fifth floor service apartment the following day.

Mohd Anuar had gone to Ean Yong’s office on that day he seized Teoh’s laptop, documents and a central processing unit.

According to Mohd Anuar he was fearful of public perception and the anger felt by Teoh’s family, friends and colleagues against him over what had happened.

He said the public had seen his picture with Teoh, which was splashed all over the media after he had gone to Ean Yong’s office at the Selangor state secretariat building.

To a question by commission chairman Tan Sri James Foong why Mohd Anuar had stopped at his home in Puchong while on the way to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya with his immediate boss Hairul Ilham Hamzah, the investigating officer said he had gone to see his wife.

(Hairul Ilham had testified last week that Mohd Anuar had asked to stop at his house for a moment before heading to the MACC headquarters on July 16, 2009 after Teoh’s remains had been found.)

“I wanted to express my feelings and fear to my wife. I told her about the public perception and anger over what had had happened and asked her to be careful and take care of herself and our children,” said Mohd Anuar who broke down and cried at this juncture.

Commission chairman Justice Foong called for a 15-minute break to allow Mohd Anuar to collect himself.

When asked by commissioner Professor Dr Mohamed Hatta Shaharom why he had cried, Mohd Anuar said he was distressed over the incident as it had taken a heavy toll on him and the MACC.

“This involved the death of a witness and as the investigating officer it was my responsibility.

“Our department was in a very bad situation after that and our operations stalled,” he said adding that those summoned to the MACC office refused to show up after Teoh’s death.

Dr Mohamed Hatta also asked Mohd Anuar if he had given a thought to the pain suffered by Teoh’s family as he only spoke about himself and his family.

“I sympathise with them,” said Mohd Anuar adding that what had happened was beyond his control.

To a question by conducting officer Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud if he (Mohd Anuar) had breached any law in the way Teoh had been handled, Mohd Anuar said his only mistake was allowing the political aide to remain in the MACC office after his statement had been recorded at 3.30am on July 16.

The inquiry continues Wednesday.

Anwar denies he is man in sex video

Anwar denies he is man in sex video
By JOSHUA FOONG and SHAUN HO

PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim denied on Monday that he was the man in the Feb 21 sex video revealed to journalists earlier Monday.

“I sternly deny this scurrilous attack.”

He said that he was at home with PKR staff, his wife, children, grandchildren and tweeting on that day and at that time.

The sex video’s time stamp on Feb 21 was from 10.23pm to 10.45pm.

Anwar said that he was told that man in the sex video looked very much like him except his stomach was bigger (perut buncit).

He stood up and quipped: “See, I’m slimmer.”

He described the video “as a good but not a perfect job.”

Anwar was speaking at a packed press conference flanked by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and other top party leaders. On a more serious note, he said that the sex video was just the latest attack by his political enemies ahead of the Sarawak polls expected some time in April.

Sarawak’s state assembly was dissolved Monday and the Election Commission will meet Wednesday to decide on the polling day.

Earlier Monday, a 21-minute video, showing a man resembling Anwar having sex with a woman, was shown to newsmen by a man who identified himself only as Datuk T. He claimed the video was recorded on Feb 21 in a local hotel room.

In the video, when the man leaves the room briefly, the woman rummages through his things and takes a watch.

Datuk T showed an Omega watch to journalists when he held the screening of the sex video earlier Monday and claimed that the watch was Anwar’s.

Asked about the watch, Anwar confirmed he owned an Omega watch and that the watch was with his wife.

He also said he did not know who Datuk T was.

“I call on the parties (behind this sex video) to stop dragging the public and country into dirty and obscene politics,” he said.

“It is a desperate act and the timing is perfect.

“Everytime we face elections – in 1999, 2004 and 2008 and now again.”

“Our members and supporters will not be generally duped into believing these claims,” he said.

Asked if he intended to make a police report, he said: “ I don’t know. I have not seen it (video). I have been advised by my lawyers that once we have found evidence, we can lodge a police report.”

Datuk T had said that he wanted the man in the video and his wife to step down within week.

Dr Wan Azizah said: “I was surprised he (Datuk T) asked me step down. What have I done?

“These attacks are not new. It is politically motivated and irresponsible.”

Even before the press conference at 5.30pm, PKR leaders had come to Anwar's defence.

“This is a doctored video of Anwar,” alleged PKR communications director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad in his tweet.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution challenged the mysterious Datuk T to reveal himself before making accusations against Anwar.

“Who is this Datuk T? We cannot just respond to any Tom, Dick or Harry. He is brave enough to challenge Anwar, but does not dare to expose himself. There needs to be some credibility,” Nasution said when contacted.

Nasution said the entire exercise was a sign of Umno’s and Barisan Nasional’s desperation in their bid to demolish Anwar.

“This has been part of a failed smear campaign for the past 12 years.

"This was also timed to divert attention away from issues of corruption and scandal in Sarawak,” said Nasution, adding he was confident the party would pass this ‘test’ because of his firm belief that Anwar had been made a victim.

PKR’s Batu MP Tian Chua, in his tweet, described the “special viewing of a doctored video of Anwar Ibrahim” to the media as a desperate tactic by Barisan Nasional to distract the debate from policies and governance ahead of the Sarawak polls.

“(Barisan) shifted to focus on smearing in character assassination. The whole purpose of the exercise is to smear (Anwar’s name). The people who presented the video viewing in Carcosa this morning won’t even reveal their identities,” he said.

Tian said he expected the mainstream media to play the story “to the extreme”.

Top 'Opposition leader' caught on sex video (Update)

PETALING JAYA: A video showing a man, resembling a top Opposition leader having sex with a woman, believed to be a foreign prostitute, has emerged.

The 30-minute video, which showed the supposedly high profile Member of Parliament in various compromising positions, is set to rock the Malaysian political arena.

The video recorded on Feb 21 was found in a hotel room in Kuala Lumpur.

Press representatives were taken to a hotel room individually to view the video footage by a group of unknown people led by a person, who only wanted to be known as Datuk T.

Datuk T said he wanted the media to watch the footage showing the politician before sending the copy to him and his wife “to identify the person in the video” a week from now.

He said if the individual in the video was the politician he had identified to the media, "then he and his wife must step down from politics.”

Datuk T said he was not “the pious person with high moral values and integrity as portrayed, and therefore is not fit to be leader.”

Datuk T said if the two did not quit politics, “I will call on several NGOs (non-government organisations) to set up an independent panel to investigate and seek professional forensic services to study the authenticity of the recordings.”

Datuk T claimed he had stumbled upon the video after he was asked by the politician to search for his watch in the room where the sexual encounter had taken place.

“As I could not find the watch on the table, I searched for it behind the dresser. I was shocked to find many strands of wires behind the dresser.

“On close inspection, I found four well-hidden CCTV cameras, I tried to open the two dresser drawers and found one was locked.

“I prised open the locked drawer using a sharp object. I found an active CCTV recorder. I disconnected the wiring and took the recorder out of the hotel,’’ he said, adding that no one had the recording except him.

“I will not hand over copies to any quarters for fear of reproduction and distribution,’’ he said.

Members of the media including The Star viewed the video clip on a computer at the hotel room, where Datuk T was heavily guarded. The Star journalist was searched and had his mobile phone taken away before being allowed to view the video. The other members of the media included those from Bernama, New Straits Times, Utusan Malaysia, China Press, the Internet portals, foreign news agencies and at least one opposition organ.

The video clip had sharp images and the woman appeared to be a fair-skinned foreigner, possibly an East Asian.

Meanwhile, with talk of the video having surfaced, PKR communications director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad tweeted, saying the video was doctored.

Dr Mahathir: Better not to have nuclear plant

Dr Mahathir: Better not to have nuclear plant

CYBERJAYA: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad Wednesday reiterated his view on not having a nuclear power plant in this country.

"You know my view about it. We do not know enough about the reaction of this material," he told reporters here when asked on his views on building the plant.

Dr Mahathir said the radiation leaking from the stricken Japanese nuclear power plant due to the tsunami after the 9.0-magnitude earthquake seemed to lend support for his concern.

"Once it is activated, it becomes radioactive. People do not know how to get rid of the waste," he said.

He noted that during his premiership, the Government had decided on four fuel strategies, namely oil, gas, coal and hydro, and nuclear was not included.

"We have bad experience already with nuclear. I don't know whether people are aware about it or not," he said.

Asked whether he would advise Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak not to have nuclear power plant, Dr Mahathir said, "I'm not an advisor. That is why I use my blog."

Malaysia plans to build two nuclear power plants that will generate 1,000 megawatts each, with the first plant ready for operation in 2021 and the second plant, a year later.

It is part of the overall long-term plan to balance energy supply. - Bernama

Blast strikes Japan plant, core safe; 2,000 bodies found on coast

Blast strikes Japan plant, core safe; 2,000 bodies found on coast
By Taiga Uranaka and Ki Joon Kwon

FUKUSHIMA, Japan (Reuters) - A second hydrogen explosion rocked a stricken nuclear power plant in Japan where authorities have been scrambling to avert a meltdown after last week's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Infrastructure -- from roads and rail to power and ports -- was crippled across much of the northeast, estimates of the cost of the disaster leapt to as much as $170 billion and analysts said the economy could be knocked back into a recession.

Japanese stocks closed down more than 6 percent, and the yen fell against the dollar.

Rescue workers combed the tsunami-battered region north of Tokyo for survivors and struggled to care for millions of people without power and water in what Prime Minister Naoto Kan has dubbed his country's worst crisis since World War Two.

Officials say at least 10,000 people were likely killed in the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that followed it, and on Monday Kyodo news agency reported that 2,000 bodies had been found in two coastal towns alone.

Crucially, officials said the thick walls around the radioactive cores of the damaged reactors at the nuclear power plant appeared to be intact after the hydrogen blast, the second there since Saturday.

The big fear is of a major radiation leak from the complex in Fukushima, 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo, where engineers have been battling since the weekend to prevent a meltdown in three reactors.

The core container of the No. 3 reactor was intact after the explosion, the government said, but it warned those still in the 20-km (13-mile) evacuation zone to stay indoors. The plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), said 11 people had been injured in the blast.

"Everything I've seen says that the containment structure is operating as it's designed to operate. It's keeping the radiation in and it's holding everything in, which is the good news," said Murray Jennex, of San Diego State University.

"This is nothing like a Chernobyl... At Chernobyl (in the Ukraine in 1986) you had no containment structure -- when it blew, it blew everything straight out into the atmosphere."

A Japanese official said before the blast that 22 people were confirmed to have suffered radiation contamination and up to 190 may have been exposed. Workers in protective clothing used hand-held scanners to check people arriving at evacuation centres.

U.S. warships and planes helping with relief efforts moved away from the coast temporarily because of low-level radiation. The U.S. Seventh Fleet described the move as precautionary.

The Singapore food authority announced it would begin testing imported Japanese produce for radiation.

NO POWER, NO WATER

Almost 2 million households were without power in the north, the government said. There were about 1.4 million without running water. Tens of thousands of people are missing.

In the town of Otsuchi in Iwate prefecture, 12,000 out of a population of 15,000 have disappeared.

"After my long career in the Red Cross where I have seen many disasters and catastrophes, this is the worst I have ever seen. Otsuchi reminds me of Osaka and Tokyo after the Second World War when everything was destroyed and flattened," Japan Red Cross President Tadateru Konoe told Reuters during a visit to the coastal town.

The government had warned of a possible explosion at the No. 3 reactor because of the buildup of hydrogen in the building housing the reactor. TV images showed smoke rising from the Fukushima facility.

TEPCO, which operates the complex, had earlier halted the injection of sea water into the reactor, resulting in a rise in radiation levels and pressure. The government had warned that an explosion was possible because of the buildup of hydrogen in the building housing the reactor.

A wounded nation has seen whole villages and towns wiped off the map by Friday's wall of water, triggering an international humanitarian effort of epic proportions.

"When the tsunami struck, I was trying to evacuate people. I looked back, and then it was like the computer graphics scene I've seen from the movie Armageddon. I -thought it was a dream - it was really like the end of the world," said Tsutomu Sato, 46, in Rikuzantakata, a town on the northeast coast.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan said the situation at the 40-year-old Fukushima nuclear plant remained worrisome and that the authorities were doing their utmost to stop damage from spreading.

"We have rescued over 15,000 people and we are working to support them and others. We will do our utmost in rescue efforts again today," he said.

Officials said on Sunday that three nuclear reactors in Fukushima were at risk of overheating, raising fears of an uncontrolled radiation leak.

Engineers worked desperately to cool the fuel rods. If they fail, the containers that house the core could melt, or even explode, releasing radioactive material into the atmosphere.

Nuclear experts said it was probably the first time in the industry's 57-year history that sea water has been used in this way, a sign of how close Japan may be to a major accident.

"Injection of sea water into a core is an extreme measure," Mark Hibbs of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "This is not according to the book."

The nuclear accident, the worst since Chernobyl in Soviet Ukraine in 1986, sparked criticism that authorities were ill-prepared and the threat that could pose to the country's nuclear power industry.

DEATH TOLL "ABOVE 10,000"

Broadcaster NHK, quoting a police official, said more than 10,000 people may have been killed as the wall of water triggered by Friday's 8.9-magnitude quake surged across the coastline, reducing whole towns to rubble. It was the biggest to have hit the quake-prone country since it started keeping records 140 years ago.

Kyodo said 80,000 people had been evacuated from a 20-km (12-mile) radius around the stricken nuclear plant, joining more than 450,000 other evacuees from quake and tsunami-hit areas in the northeast of the main island Honshu.

Some workers showed up on Monday at a factory in Kuji even though it had been destroyed. Asked why he was there, a young worker smoking a cigarette outside the skeletal remains said: "Because it's a work day."

Thousands spent another freezing night huddled in blankets over heaters in emergency shelters along the northeastern coast, a scene of devastation after the quake sent a 10-metre (33-foot) wave surging through towns and cities in the Miyagi region, including its main coastal city of Sendai.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

Hiromichi Shirakawa, chief economist for Japan at Credit Suisse said in a note to clients that the economic loss will likely be around 14-15 trillion yen ($171-183 billion) just to the region hit by the quake and tsunami.

Even that would put it above the commonly accepted cost of the 1995 Kobe quake which killed 6,000 people.

The earthquake has forced many firms to suspend production and shares in some of Japan's biggest companies tumbled on Monday, with Toyota Corp dropping 9.5 percent . Shares in Australian-listed uranium miners also dived.

"When we talk about natural disasters, we tend to see an initial sharp drop in production ... then you tend to have a V-shaped rebound. But initially everyone underestimates the damage," said Michala Marcussen, head of global economics at Societe Generale.

Risk modelling company AIR Worldwide said insured losses from the earthquake could reach nearly $35 billion.

The Bank of Japan offered a combined 15 trillion yen ($183 billion) to the banking system earlier in the day to soothe market jitters.

Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda said authorities were closely watching the yen after the currency initially rallied on expectations of repatriations by insurers and others. The currency later reversed course in volatile trading.

The earthquake was the fifth most powerful to hit the world in the past century. It surpassed the Great Kanto quake of Sept. 1, 1923, which had a magnitude of 7.9 and killed more than 140,000 people in the Tokyo area.

PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is unconcerned about possible lawsuits over his memoirs.

Dr Mahathir said he was driven to tell the truth in his autobiography A Doctor in the House.

“There will be those who will not be satisfied.

“If they want to sue, sue lah,” he quipped after launching the book at Mid Valley Megamall yesterday.

Dr Mahathir said he had kept its publication a secret until the launch date to avoid a possible court injunction to stop its release.

“I want people to read it. Whatever they think of it is their prerogative,” he said.

It took him eight years to write the autobiography, he said. “I did not type. I used long hand.”

Dr Mahathir said during his tenure as Prime Minister, he was described as a dictator.

“(In the autobiography) I tried to prove that I am not. But some people will still feel otherwise,” he said.

To a question, Dr Mahathir said that through his biography, he wanted to deliver the message that it was not impossible to achieve anything when one is willing to learn.

“I was a commoner, I was not trained in the field of administration, economics or finance. But you can learn if you want to learn. The best reward is not monetary gains but the results of your effort,” he said.

Dr Mahathir also took a swipe at Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim whom he accused had claimed credit for certain things.

“He (Anwar) is claiming that the setting up of UIA (International Islamic University Malaysia) was his idea,” he said.

On his next project, Dr Mahathir said he would look into rewriting The Malay Dilemma.

“When they (the Malays) were poor they were in a dilemma. When they are rich, there is a bigger dilemma,” he said.

Two directors jailed and fined over Suremax share manipulation

Two directors jailed and fined over Suremax share manipulation

The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today sentenced Datuk Phillip Wong Chee Kheong and Francis Bun Lit Chun to 24 months imprisonment and a fine of RM 3 million (in default 6 months imprisonment ) and 3 months imprisonment and a fine of RM2 million (in default 6 months imprisonment) respectively for their involvement in the manipulation of Suremax Group Berhad (Suremax) shares.

In passing the sentence, Judge Komathy SM Suppiah said "The Court has to set imprisonment terms as the new benchmark in securities cases. The securities market should be real and genuine. Market manipulation is a serious offence affecting the confidence of investors and thus imprisonment sentence should be meted out."

On 7 January 2011, Datuk Phillip, 48, and Francis Bun Lit Chun, 41, were convicted under s84(1) of the SIA for creating a misleading appearance of active trading in the shares of Suremax by trading in nine accounts without any change in the beneficial ownership of the shares on the stock exchange. They had been charged on 25 October 2005 with 38 witnesses being called by the prosecution. Both accused testified when the defence was called.

The SC will take whatever action necessary to protect investors and to maintain a fair and orderly capital market and we will continue to proactively pursue market misconduct cases because such activities severely undermine investor confidence and tarnish the reputation of the Malaysian capital market.
