Najib: democracy alive and well in Malaysia

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's victory in the Permatang Pauh by-election shows that democracy is very much alive in the country, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Congratulating Anwar on his win, Najib said it also proved that there was no manipulation of democracy as alleged by the PKR adviser.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim won the Permatang Pauh seat with a thumping majority of 15,671.

With the victory, Anwar will take over as the parlimentary Opposition Leader.
Anwar polled 31,195 votes while his Barisan Nasional opponent, Datuk Arif Shah Omar got 15,524. Hanafi Hamat of Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia(Akim), who contested as an independent, lost his deposit.

The PKR de facto leader last won the Permatang Pauh seat in 1995 with a majority 22,515 votes.

Anwar could not contest the March 8 general election because he was barred from contesting for five years after he failed to overturn a corruption verdict against him.
